New Implant Cuts Risk Of Stroke, Boston Scientific Reveals

Luckily for Nancy Hammer, her cardiologist thought she was a perfect candidate for a new device called Watchman.

Designed by Boston Scientific, Watchman is the first of its kind. Described as a left atrial appendage closure device, it reduces the risk of stroke in high-risk patients who suffer from an irregular heartbeat, or atrial fibrillation, by keeping dangerous blood clots from entering the bloodstream.

Hammer, 79, was one of two patients to get the procedure this month at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
