British biotech success stories are few and far between. The phenomenon makes little sense in a country that punches well above its weight for scientific research and has plenty of entrepreneurs keen to turn discoveries into businesses. It is only later, when companies are looking for serious capital to grow, that they stumble into the quicksand. Faced with a dearth of willing investors, many end up turning to US backers, or, in many cases, selling themselves to rivals across the Atlantic, and losing their national identity.
