MassBioEd Announces New Members to its Board of Directors

Today, the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation(MassBioEd) announced the appointments of current MassBioEd Board members Christopher Murphy and Lauren Celano as Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, and new Board member Michael Levy as Treasurer.

August 1, 2019 (CAMBRIDGE, MA) – Today, the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation(MassBioEd) announced the appointments of current MassBioEd Board members Christopher Murphy and Lauren Celano as Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, and new Board member Michael Levy as Treasurer.

Christopher Murphy, Vice President & General Manager of Viral Vector Services at Thermo Fisher Scientific, has over 30 years of experience in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, process development, plant operations, and quality system implementation. He previously served as Chief Operating Officer at Brammer Bio, which was recently acquired by Thermo Fisher. Prior, he oversaw operations at Sanofi Genzyme’s Allston-Landing site. Chris is an advocate for biotechnology education and workforce development and provides strong support and guidance to the team on strategic direction for the organization.

“The need for MassBioEd has never been greater, as they are well positioned to develop the pipeline of talent required by the growing life sciences industry in Massachusetts. I am proud to lead the Board of Directors during this exciting time and look forward to working closely with the talented staff at MassBioEd to fulfil their mission,” said Murphy.

Lauren Celano, CEO and Co-Founder of Propel Careers, has been very active in supporting MassBioEd’s recent workforce development initiative over the past few years as a Director on MassBioEd’s Board. She has worked with leading organizations in the Boston life sciences ecosystem for about 20 years, the last 10 of which have focused on strengthening the talent pipeline.

Michael Levy is an Assurance Senior Manager in Ernst & Young LLP’s Life Sciences Practice in Cambridge, MA. With over 10 years of experience, he assists clients in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries with accounting and auditing matters, including issues in the areas of internal control and reporting under the rules and regulations of the U.S. As Treasurer, Michael’s extensive experience with a variety of complex accounting areas will aid MassBioEd in its financial planning and help ensure adequate controls are in place to protect the organization.

The MassBioEd Board will work closely with MassBioEd’s new Executive Director, Sunny Schwartz, who officially started on June 26th.

“We are thrilled to welcome these new executive appointments and I am eager to learn more about the work they do within the biopharma community as we combine strengths to improve and sustain the life sciences workforce,” said Schwartz. “Together, I look forward to collaborating with industry and academia to progress educational opportunities and workforce development for teachers and students across the Commonwealth.”
