CRANBURY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Managed Healthcare Executive®, a multimedia platform that provides market intelligence and solutions to C-suite executives of health plans, unveiled the results of a new survey identifying the top managed care pharmacy challenges and how health care executives are solving those problems. The survey netted responses from 200 executives in medical practices, hospitals, large health systems, pharmacy benefit management organizations and consulting firms.

“This is just another example of the many ways Managed Healthcare Executive® brings relevant market intelligence to help healthcare executives better understand trends affecting the industry,” said Daniel R. Verdon, vice president of content and strategy for MultiMedia Healthcare LLC.

The national survey, conducted in the first quarter of 2019, asked managed care executives about cost and access to pharmaceuticals, the changing roles of pharmacy benefit managers, evolving payment models and more.

The survey identified five key tactics to help reduce drug costs:

  • Enhanced point-of-prescribing tools to assist prescribers in identification and encourage the use of the most effective treatments;
  • Adoption and enforced deployment of evidence-based clinical pathways;
  • Revised benefit design models to further incentivize patient use of lower cost options
  • Narrower and more exclusionary formularies;
  • More aggressive and expanded utilization management strategies (prior authorizations, step therapy and limited initial refills).

Coupled with the results of the survey are insights from field experts helping to break down and analyze data, as well as provide other health care executives a path forward to 2020 and beyond.

The results of the survey and article are featured in the June 2019 issue of Managed Healthcare Executive®.
