WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Joint Biological Standoff Detection System (JBSDS) will be demonstrated for the first time at the Association of the U.S. Army’s (AUSA) 2004 Annual Meeting & Exposition on October 25th-27th in Washington, D.C. Battelle, the largest non-profit applied research and development organization in the world, provides logistics and technical support for the prime contractor, Science & Engineering Services, Inc. (SESI) of Columbia, Maryland, on the JBSDS program.
The JBSDS is the first autonomous standoff detection system that provides near real-time detect-to-warn ranging and tracking of biological threats at distances up to 5 kilometers. Using light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology, the system automatically analyzes aerosol fluorescence for biological threat discrimination. Additionally, the system can operate at a fixed site or from a stationary position on a mobile platform, such as a HMMWV.
To provide total force protection, the JBSDS will be used in coordination with the Joint Biological Point Detection System (JBPDS), a bio-detection instrument suite currently in use by the U.S. military to detect and identify biological warfare agents in air. Working together, the JBSDS will identify potential threats from a distance and alert troops to take protective measures. The presence of biological agents will be confirmed when the cloud passes over the JBPDS, which will trigger local and remote warning systems to facilitate a more focused response.
Both JBSDS and JBPDS are in the portfolio of programs under the Joint PEO for Chemical and Biological Defense.
“We are proud to support SESI as a member of the JBSDS team,” said Steve Kelly, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Battelle National Security Division. “Battelle scientists and engineers bring more than 50 years of experience in chemical, biological, and radiological defense to developing innovative and practical solutions to make our nation more secure.”
Other highlights at Battelle’s booth during AUSA 2004 will include the following demonstrations:
- Starlight -- a highly advanced data mining and knowledge visualization tool for decision-makers; - Customized Light Weight HMMWV Armor Kits -- lightweight bolt-on armor kits for 360 degrees of ballistic protection on military vehicles; - Blackhawk Caution Advisory Panel -- low cost, low maintenance instrumentation redesigned for increased reliability and night vision compatibility; and - Acoustic Inspection Device -- ultrasonic technology used to detect contents of sealed containers.
