SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Invictus Medical has just been granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for technology that extends the capability of its initial product, the GELShield extracranial pressure relief device used in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
“Wearable technology is an important part of healthcare and this patent will cover many important clinical innovations in our pipeline,” said George Hutchinson, Invictus Medical’s Chief Technology Officer. “Our first product in this space will be a sleep monitor for neonates that also monitors environmental factors in the NICU. Clinicians need this information to ensure adequate sleep, sleep that is essential for healing.”
The literature indicates that sleep is critical for growth and for healing, and that nurses strive to provide the best environment for adequate sleep. Yet without knowing how much the infant is sleeping or how quality of sleep corresponds to environmental factors, nurses are at a disadvantage in optimizing their care. This product seeks to address this problem.
This product will be synergistic with Invictus’ noise cancellation technology under development that is intended for use in incubators in the NICU.
“We are developing a range of products to address the needs of the neonatal patient and their caregivers,” said Dennis Kane, Invictus Medical’s CEO. “While the GELShield is an important first step, the pipeline of products under development is really poised to make a difference to these most vulnerable patients.”
