SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 26, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ICU Medical, Inc. (Nasdaq:ICUI) today announced that its ChemoCLAVE™ closed system transfer device (CSTD) for the safe handling of hazardous drugs can help hospitals comply with new legislation designed to protect healthcare workers and patients from accidental exposure to antineoplastic and other hazardous drugs during preparation and administration. Earlier this month, the Washington State legislature passed a landmark piece of legislation (SB 5594) requiring the establishment of a workplace standard regulating the handling of hazardous drugs. The legislation requires that the new standard comply with all aspects of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommendations on preventing occupational exposure to hazardous drugs in healthcare settings. This new piece of legislation prompted OSHA, The Joint Commission and NIOSH to send out a letter to all hospitals in the United States, encouraging them to address safe drug handling.
