Hong Kong Hospital Authority Helps Combat SARS And Enhance Front-Line Care By Standardizing On Informatica

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., July 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Informatica Corporation , a leading provider of data integration software, today announced that the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, a statutory body that manages all public hospitals and clinics in Hong Kong, has successfully standardized on Informatica's data integration software to consolidate medical reporting, research, auditing and front-line clinical care data -- including near-real time contact tracing to help control outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory System (SARS) and other communicable diseases.

"Our Informatica-powered data warehouse has unquestionably improved the efficiency and quality of patient data available to front-line medical staff in Hong Kong," said Michael Fung, senior systems manager for information systems at the Hospital Authority. "In the past, it was extremely difficult to get a complete and up-to-date patient view across hospitals and clinics, but Hong Kong doctors are now achieving that quite easily. We are able to engage in more comprehensive medical investigations for improved care, and have in place a powerful platform for sharing critical information in near real time to aid in controlling the spread of disease, including SARS."

The Hospital Authority uses the Informatica data integration platform to transform and consolidate data from 30 clinical systems implemented across 43 hospitals and 121 general and specialized outpatient clinics. The integrated data fuels a data warehouse containing historical data on six million patients, or 90 percent of the municipality's population. The data enables flexible, holistic views of the organization's business and medical performance, as well as expanded clinical research in support of evidence-based medicine.

The integrated data also powers a clinical data repository designed for instant retrieval of up-to-date patient records across all hospitals and clinics. During the recent SARS crisis, Informatica software was leveraged to create an external reporting system for sharing SARS-related data in near real time with the government's Department of Health to help support contact tracing and quarantine control. Replacing a fax-based information-sharing process, the system was set up in just five days, with the data integration portion taking less than two days to implement.

"The Hospital Authority is presently working on an expanded communicable disease information system, for which we plan to use Informatica to help enable proactive surveillance and manage future disease outbreaks," continued Fung. "We continue to use Informatica for our data integration initiatives because it meets all our requirements and is currently the most flexible, user-friendly and powerful platform available."

"Truly an information-powered organization, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority exemplifies the broad range of integrated information requirements facing healthcare and other large organizations today -- from analytical, to front-line operational, to information sharing and compliance challenges," said Paul Albright, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Informatica. "We're gratified to have played a role in helping the medical community suppress SARS in Hong Kong and more fully leverage the large amount of data at its disposal."

The Hospital Authority is a statutory body established on December 1, 1990 under the Hospital Authority Ordinance to manage all public hospitals in Hong Kong. It is an independent organization which currently employs 49,760 staff and is accountable to the Hong Kong Government through the Secretary for Health and Welfare.
