Traditional medical procedures for determining the possibly dangerous side effects of prescription drugs frequently include using double-blind placebo based clinical studies. In these double blind studies, some of the patients are given a real drug while others a given a placebo. The patient groups are then monitored for long periods to determine who has better results or more adverse reactions.
