FORT COLLINS, Colo., June 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Firefly Medical Inc., is pleased to announce that Dr. Neri Cohen has joined the company as Chief Medical Officer. In this new role he will consult with Firefly on market expansion and clinical application of the IVEA patient ambulation device, with a particular focus on engagement with physicians and hospital executives.
The IVEA is transformative hospital equipment designed to hold and organize the patient’s monitoring and support equipment and provide a stable platform for ambulation. Early and frequent ambulation is recognized as an essential element of patient recovery, yet traditional hospital equipment makes it difficult to safely and efficiently ambulate patients encumbered with IVs, pumps, drainage devices, oxygen and other devices. The IVEA eliminates set-up time for ambulation and makes it possible for one caregiver, rather than two or three, to safely walk a patient. Time saved means more patients can ambulate more often.
“Nurses and physical therapists immediately understand the IVEA’s clinical benefits because they’re using it daily to improve patient care,” says Firefly Medical CEO Trevor Carlton. “Now, with Dr. Cohen’s assistance, we’re confident that we’ll be able to communicate those benefits just as effectively to physicians and executives interested in improving patient outcomes and lowering costs.”
Dr. Cohen is Director of Thoracic Oncology at the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute and vice-chair (Innovation, Information and Technology) for the Surgery Department at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. A staunch advocate of early, frequent and aggressive mobilization of patients, he designed his first Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol in 1998, publishing the five-year data in the Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety in 2004.
“Throughout, I have always had to compel and cajole nursing and PT to engage largely because of a lack of dedicated equipment to safely mobilize patients after surgery,” says Cohen. “The IVEA mobility device is what’s been missing for the past 20 years. For the first time, we have an elegantly simple device that, with almost no effort, and, with very limited staff, can allow for safe mobilization of patients early and often after surgery.”
Dr. Cohen will maintain his position at GBMC, while he serves in this vital role for Firefly Medical.
