MILLBURN, N.J., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Arthur L. Caplan, PhD will be the keynote speaker at the fifth annual Therapeutic Insight Conference. Therapeutic Insight 2005 (“TI2005") will take place on May 1 - 3, 2005, at the Ritz-Carlton, Boston.
Drug safety has always been a key issue for the industry, its regulators and the public, but never before has the risk been on the scale of that of VIOXX, Tysabri and Bextra. Dr. Caplan will explore the implications of commercial blockbusters in the context of current clinical trial standards, stakeholder expectations and the increasingly realizable potential of pharmacogenomics, physiomics and metabolomics. “The pharmaceutical industry is reeling from a multitude of problems, and ethics are at the core of consideration if the industry, regulators, investors and researchers are to regain public confidence,” notes Dr. Caplan. In the spirit of previous Therapeutic Insight keynote presentations, Dr. Caplan’s observations are expected to lead to a provocative and constructive dialogue around these complex issues.
Dr. Caplan is Emmanuel and Robert Hart Professor of Bioethics, Center for Bioethics & Department of Medical Ethics, University of Pennsylvania. He is chair of the Department of Medical Ethics at University of Pennsylvania, in addition to serving as the Trustee Professor and Director of the University’s Center for Bioethics. Dr. Caplan is also a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and in the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine. He is the author or editor of more than twenty books and over 500 papers in refereed journals, has written a weekly newspaper column on bioethics for the Hearst/King Features syndicate and currently writes a regular column on bioethics for MSNBC.com.
