SACRAMENTO, Calif., /PRNewswire/ -- Granite Bay’s Christa Clark, MD, FACS is excited to award the second annual S.P.R.O.W.T. (Supporting & Promoting Real Opportunities for Women to Thrive) Scholarship to Sacramento resident Nicole Brevin, who is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in social work at the University of Southern California.

“It is my pleasure and privilege to present this year’s S.P.R.O.W.T. Scholarship to Nicole. Her tenacity, strength, and passion for a thriving community are clear in her academic achievements as well as her community service.”

The S.P.R.O.W.T. Scholarship program was established in 2017 to support women who are pursuing a non-traditional educational path and is awarded annually to one female California resident. As this year’s scholarship winner, Nicole will receive $2,500 for current and future educational expenses.

Nicole immediately stood out to Dr. Clark and the selection committee among more than 200 applicants. After entering the foster care system at age 9, Nicole changed schools multiple times during her formative years. The lack of stability in her education caused her to fall behind significantly and eventually drop out of high school. She fought her way back, enrolling in community college via California’s Ability to Benefit program and going on to earn her Bachelor’s degree. She is currently working toward her Master of Social Work at University of Southern California with the goal of becoming a professor in her field.

In addition to her studies, Nicole is passionate about serving her community. She has volunteered for the Sacramento State ASI Food Pantry, the International Rescue Committee, and the American Red Cross.

“Nicole’s story is so inspiring,” comments Dr. Clark. “It takes a lot of courage, self-confidence, and hard work to accomplish what she has, and she did not let the obstacles in her past limit her. I am proud to help support her pursuits and look forward to seeing her achieve her goals.”

Dr. Clark is grateful for the opportunity to give back to women in her community and looks forward to hosting the S.P.R.O.W.T. Scholarship program in the future.
