Sizing tools for cervical spine surgery
- Reduce weight by replacing stainless steel
- Compatible with autoclave sterilization
PEEK resin VESTAKEEPⓇ Care* from Evonik Resource Efficiency GmbH Performance Foams (Germany) and Daicel-Evonik Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, President: Tadashi Kanai), has been adopted as a sizing jig (commonly known as a “trial”) for pedestoplasty at Ammtec Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Suginami-ku, Tokyo, President: Etsuko Ayayaka).
Laminoplasty is performed on patients at risk of becoming paralyzed or suffering from extreme pain due to compression of the spinal cord related to deformities of the cervical spine. During the procedure, a section called the “lamina” opens like a door to increase space inside a compressed spinal cord. A plate, called a “basket”, is then affixed to the unfolded part. Prior to surgery, physicians use X-rays to determine the most suitable size for the patient. During surgery it is placed and expanded, followed by applying multiple trials to the lamina to test which dimensions best fit the patient.
Traditionally, the trial was made mainly of stainless steel. However, stainless steel is heavy and the jig can be damaged when multiple products are cleaned simultaneously. VESTAKEEP® Care for medical use is lightweight and withstands the sterilization process at 130 ℃ and the elevated temperatures of an autoclave. It also does not cause damage when coming in contact with tools. Additionally, its excellent biocompatibility makes it possible to make contact with the spine safely.
The tool is molded by Nippon Chemical Screw Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, President: Fumio Hanji) using injection technology and has been manufactured in trials of exactly the same size as plates.
A sophisticated, easy-to-use instrument can reduce the burden on the physician during surgery and provide reassurance to the patient undergoing
