Congressional Hearing To Be Held On Hepatitis C Crisis Announced By The Hepatitis C Caring Ambassadors Program

OREGON CITY, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 2004--The Hepatitis C Caring Ambassadors Program (HCCAP) announced the Committee on Government Reform will conduct an oversight hearing entitled "Stalking a Furtive Killer: A Review of the Federal Government's Efforts to Combat Hepatitis C" on December 14, 2004. The hearing will assess the federal government's progress since 1998 in responding to the hepatitis C epidemic. Hepatitis C is the most common blood-borne viral infection in the United States. At least 4 million Americans are currently infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), with 30,000 new infections occurring yearly. Hepatitis C is the leading cause of chronic liver disease in the US and the most common indication for liver transplant.
