RICHMOND, Va., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Selenium levels may predict the risk of a man’s prostate cancer, but there was no simple, reliable selenium test -- until now.
The first selenium test that predicts prostate cancer risk, SeleniumHealth(TM), is now available exclusively from Bostwick Laboratories, Inc., an international diagnostic pathology laboratory. A man simply trims one or more toenails and submits the clippings for selenium content. SeleniumHealth(TM) is provided by Bostwick Laboratories, Inc. under license from the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation.
A man’s risk of prostate cancer is modifiable. If he has too little selenium he can supplement his diet, and if he has too much selenium he can stop selenium supplementation.
“This new test enables men to take an active role in reducing their personal cancer risk by paying attention to how much selenium they consume,” said David G. Bostwick, MD, MBA, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of Bostwick Laboratories, Inc. “Every man should know his baseline level before taking selenium as too little or too much may do more harm than good.”
Supplementation with the trace mineral selenium -- an essential nutrient found in a variety of foods -- can reduce oxidative stress and genetic damage in the prostate. But too little selenium -- or too much -- can lead to undesirably high levels of DNA damage within the prostate.
“When we studied the relationship between selenium intake and how much DNA damage accumulated in the prostate, we discovered that the amount of DNA damage was most severe at the lowest and highest selenium intake. Clearly, more was not always better,” said David J. Waters, DVM, PhD, Director of the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation.
Bostwick Laboratories, Inc. is the leading premium diagnostic testing and information reference laboratory for physicians and patients that focuses on urologic diseases such as prostate cancer. The Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation is a not-for-profit cancer research foundation based in West Lafayette, IN that is dedicated to helping people live longer and better lives through basic, comparative, and clinical research.
