ADELAIDE, Australia, June 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Bionomics Limited (ASX:BNO, OTCQX:BNOEF), a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of innovative therapeutics for the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system and cancer, announced today that it filed a patent application covering the use of BNC105 in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors for the treatment of cancer. This new patent is based on important preclinical findings regarding the synergistic effects in preclinical models of a combination of the company’s proprietary novel oncology compound BNC105 and antibodies against known immuno-oncology targets.

In these preclinical studies animals with MC38 colorectal tumours had 40% inhibition of tumour growth when treated with BNC105 as a monotherapy and 74% inhibition in tumour growth when treated with an antibody targeting PD1. Animals treated with the combination of BNC105 + anti-PD1 therapy experienced greater benefit with 97% inhibition in tumour growth.
In addition animals with CT26 colorectal tumours had 27% inhibition of tumour growth when treated with BNC105 as a monotherapy and 14% inhibition in tumour growth when treated with an antibody targeting CTLA4. Animals treated with the combination of BNC105 + anti-CTLA4 therapy experienced greater benefit with 70% inhibition in tumour growth.
Bionomics aims to present these data at the Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics conference in November this year.
About Immune Checkpoints
Immune checkpoints are “immunological brakes” used by healthy cells to avoid over-activation of the immune system. Tumour cells often take advantage of these checkpoints to escape detection by the immune system. CTLA-4 and PD-1 are checkpoints that have been studied as targets for cancer therapy. Inhibiting a checkpoint (ie, “releasing the brakes”) on the immune system may enhance the ability of the immune system to attack and kill tumours.
