‘Beating’ Heart Machine Expedites Development Of New Surgical Tools, Techniques

Medical News Today -- A machine developed at North Carolina State University in Raleigh may allow researchers to expedite development of new tools and techniques for heart surgery. The dynamic heart system pumps fluid through a pig heart so that it continues to function like a live heart even after it’s been removed from the animal’s body. The machine will allow researchers to test and refine surgical technologies in a realistic surgical environment without the cost and time associated with animal or clinical trials, its developers say.
