BEIJING, April 19 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Lee Jong-wook arrived in Beijing 19 April for a two-day official visit.
During his stay, Dr. Lee will meet with senior Government leaders for broad discussions about health in China. Dr Lee’s visit comes after China’s recent success confronting SARS and Avian Influenza. It is also a period in which China is launching new initiatives in public health and health care systems.
Dr Lee will also discuss WHO’s 3 by 5 HIV/AIDS program, which seeks to have 3 million people in antiretroviral drug treatment programs by the end of 2005. The initiative involves training staff in 60 countries to carry out the necessary diagnostic and treatment activities, building up a central system for the procurement and distribution of drugs, and strengthening national health systems.
While in Beijing, Dr. Lee will address a select audience of health experts at the Chinese Academy of Medical Science. Dr. Lee will speak about China’s successes in health and the challenges yet to come.
