The Doctors Company Co-hosts Sixth Annual Legal Reform Summit

NAPA, Calif., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Doctors Company, the nation’s leading physician-owned medical malpractice insurance provider, is pleased to announce its participation in the Sixth Annual Legal Reform Summit, which will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2005. The event will be hosted at the offices of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform and the National Chamber Foundation in Washington, D.C.

This year, the summit will undertake an in-depth examination of legal issues affecting American businesses, including securities litigation, medical liability reform, global forum shopping, and reform trends at the state level.

Richard E. Anderson, M.D., F.A.C.P., chairman and CEO of The Doctors Company, will focus on possible alternatives to current medical-legal jurisprudence as well as highlight successful state efforts to enact the key elements of California’s Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA). Joining Dr. Anderson on the panel will be James R. Copland, director of the Manhattan Institute’s Center for Legal Policy, and Billy Tauzin, president and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

“Over the past year, Americans have become increasingly aware of the negative affect that nonmeritorious lawsuits have on both the health care delivery system and small- and medium-sized businesses,” said Leona Egeland Siadek, vice president of Government Relations for The Doctors Company. “The Legal Reform Summit provides an opportunity for the development of solutions to reduce this wasteful and destructive litigation.”

The Legal Reform Summit is hosted by The Doctors Company in partnership with the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform and the National Chamber Foundation. The event draws senior government officials, business leaders, legal scholars, and members of the media for the discussion of the current state of the legal reform movement and its importance to the U.S. economy.

The Legal Reform Summit will be broadcast live via the Internet and can be accessed by visiting the Sixth Annual Legal Reform Summit Web Site.

The program also features the annual Legal Reform Summit Awards, which honor individuals and organizations whose outstanding work has contributed to the efforts to make America’s civil justice system simpler, fairer, and faster for everyone.
