St. John Hospital Announces $156 Million Investment In Its Detroit Campus

DETROIT, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- St. John Hospital and Medical Center has announced plans to expand the hospital campus over the next five years, designed to solidify its reputation as a regional destination hospital for primary and advanced medical treatment and research.

“This $156 million investment in our Detroit campus will result in a physical transformation that positions us among the best facilities in the nation,” says Mark Taylor, president of St. John Hospital and Medical Center. “We are taking a complete patient-focused approach, designing services and processes that make medical care more accessible and more convenient, with the latest medical and surgical advances.”

Immediate Plans for the hospital campus include:

Construction of an eight-level 288,000 square-foot North Pavilion at St. John Hospital and Medical Center, to include:

* A highly accessible main entrance with atrium lobby adjacent to convenient parking.

* Consolidated outpatient diagnostic services including X-ray, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI scan), Computed Tomography (CT scan) and Lab services.

* Addition of 144 private rooms.

* Upgraded and consolidated cardiovascular institute, with catheterization labs, electrophysiology labs, vascular labs, special procedure rooms, recovery space and offices for research and education.

* This $141 million investment is expected to open in 2008. Expanded and redesigned Emergency Department, to include:

* Addition of 30,000 square feet that will double the current ED. It will include private treatment modules to improve patient privacy and patient satisfaction. It also will improve the design for better medical management and improved patient flow throughout the treatment process.

* Accessibility for ambulances will improve by relocating the ED entrance closer to Moross Road.

* More convenient patient parking. * This $15 million investment is expected to be complete in early 2009.

Taylor says the effort is a focused strategy developed among the health system’s leaders, which include physicians and community members. It is designed around providing the highest level of patient care and exceptional customer service. “This ambitious effort will enhance our ability to provide leading edge technology and services in our specialty areas, including cardiovascular care, cancer, surgery and emergency medicine. The plan also provides flexibility in meeting the changing needs of the facility and patients we serve,” he says.

Funding for the improvements will be generated from St. John Hospital’s retained earnings, a bond offering through its parent company Ascension Health, as well as philanthropic contributions. Updated information on the plan will be available at http://www.stjohn.org/ .
