PhDx Systems And Smith & Nephew Sign Agreement

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- PhDx Systems, a provider of software and services for documentation of medical outcomes, today announced that it has signed an agreement between the company and Smith & Nephew, Inc. Orthopaedics Division (S&N). PhDx is providing Smith & Nephew with web-based outcomes software services to conduct multiple post-market studies to track, measure and evaluate the results of surgical procedures using S&N knee and hip components.

PhDx will develop S&N-specific hip and knee data collection surveys and schedules to track implanted devices in these post market studies. The multi-center studies will follow and compare patients from pre-surgical treatment through surgery for up to ten years and will measure clinical and radiographic data, patient functional status and satisfaction, resource utilization and validate device outcomes.

According to Geoff Mather, PhDx president, “We are pleased to partner with Smith & Nephew on their high profile post market studies. Smith & Nephew understands that scientific evidence from prospective, real world, outcomes studies is needed to drive the adoption of their new technology and new procedures in today’s highly competitive orthopedics marketplace. Our web-based orthopedic application will enable them to collect real-time, comprehensive outcomes data while enabling physicians to compare their individual practice data with that of the entire study group.”

“Smith & Nephew has exceptional orthopaedic products to help improve patients’ lives. PhDx will facilitate our need to collect data that allows us to evaluate and prove our product performance and addresses healthcare economics questions about orthopaedic implants,” said Les Sprinkle, vice-president Regulatory/Clinical Affairs and Quality. “We anticipate conducting multiple studies that will position Smith & Nephew as the leader in product quality and performance.”

Physicians participating in the studies will use PhDx secure, Internet software to track outcomes data. The program is delivered through an Application Service Provider (ASP) model, where customers access the applications via a secure web site over the Internet and PhDx retains responsibility for providing and maintaining the database and IT infrastructure. This ASP model offers cost-effectiveness and simplicity of use, implementation and maintenance. The physician’s staff manages all aspects of survey distribution, data collection, tracking and reporting and has real-time access to their outcomes data.

Standard reports for physicians include individual patient outcomes that graphically detail a patient’s progress at the point-of-care; patient comparisons, which evaluate a patient’s progress against that of all patients having the same procedure; and study outcomes, which summarize surgical procedures, clinical outcomes, pain measurement, patient satisfaction and cost drivers for the physician’s patient population.

Using the PhDx(R) Smith & Nephew applications, the company can collect and measure data from multiple sites in a consolidated database with real time reporting. Based upon the large volume of participating surgeons and patients, more information will be available to support adoption of new technologies.
