Perkins+Will To Provide Architecture And Design Services For NIH’s $150 Million Building 10 E Wing Renovation Project In Bethesda, MD

Washington, D.C. (April 22, 2015) – Perkins+Will announced today that the National Institutes of Health (“NIH”) has engaged the global architecture and design firm’s Washington, D.C. and Atlanta offices to provide design services for the $150 million renovation of the E Wing at NIH Building 10.

For this project, Perkins+Will will provide pre-design, design and post-design services for approximately 11 Institutes and Centers, consisting of program validation; schematic, design development and construction documentation; and construction administration oversight.

Approximately 249,500 square feet of former patient care and laboratory areas, as well as support space, will be converted to new BSL-2 biomedical research laboratory areas, lab support, teaching facilities, office space and building support space for about 800 personnel in various research programs.

These researchers represent a number of NIH Institutes and Centers, including the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (“NIAID”), the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (“NINDS”), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (“NHLBI”), the Clinical Center – Division of Transfusion Medicine (“CC-DTM”) and the National Institute of Mental Health (“NIMH”), among others.

The E Wing renovation will be performed in three separate construction phases, consisting of four floors each starting in 2018 and ending in 2021.

The project scope features full interior and systems renovations for new laboratory, lab support, and office facilities on floors 1 through 13, mechanical equipment rooms on floors 4, 9, 13 and 14, and upgrades to provide teaching facilities and administrative support space, as well as MEP (“Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing”) support systems on floors B2 and B1.

Jeffrey Welter, LEED AP BD+C, PMP, a Managing Principal in Perkins+Will’s D.C. office, notes that key team members from the firm’s successful John Edward Porter Neuroscience Research Center Phase II project, delivered in March of 2014, contributed to this latest NIH win.

“We are very excited to again be working with the National Institutes of Health in modernizing and repositioning the next phase of the Building 10 renovation program,” he says.

A complex totaling more than 1 million square feet on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md., Building 10 is the world's largest clinical research hospital.
