Newton North High School Students Explore STEM Career Opportunities At Genzyme

14 students shadow scientists and industry execs on Career Exploration Day

April 16, 2015 (CAMBRIDGE, MA) – Yesterday, Genzyme Corporation hosted 14 students from Newton North High School to shadow life sciences professionals at Career Exploration Day organized by the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation (MassBioEd).

“Career Exploration Day provides a great opportunity for our employees to share their passion for biotech with local students and spark curiosity and interest in science,” said Chris Murphy, Vice President of Operations for Genzyme’s Allston Landing facility. “We believe increasing the interest and understanding of science for people of all ages is beneficial to our company and our communities.”

Career Exploration Days include a variety of activities for students such as opportunities to meet one-on-one with life sciences professionals, shadow scientists in laboratories, and tour company facilities. Career Exploration Days provide high school students with an opportunity to experience a tangible connection between the STEM curriculum they see in their classrooms and the groundbreaking scientific innovation that drives the Massachusetts life sciences supercluster.

“When students see cutting-edge science and the connection between their high school curriculum and the life-saving work being done in company labs, it sparks their interest in biotechnology,” said Lance Hartford, Executive Director of the MassBioEd Foundation. “Career Exploration Day exposes students to a variety of careers in the life sciences and shows them that high school science can be the first step to an exciting future.”

This event, part of MassBioEd’s BioTeach program, aims to increase students’ interest in pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) related careers as part of MassBioEd’s BioTeach program. Through BioTeach, MassBioEd works to bring lab equipment, teacher professional development, and student career exploration experiences to students throughout the state to educate and inspire future scientists.
