HOUSTON, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- New York Oncology Hematology and Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers, both affiliated with the US Oncology Network, received Clinical Trial Participation Awards at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Atlanta.
The Clinical Trial Participation Awards are given to community oncology practices for their dedication to improving the care of people with cancer through increased participation in clinical trials. Criteria for the awards include patient accrual to clinical trials over a three-year period, with special emphasis given to practices that achieved high accrual rates in minority and underrepresented populations.
"These awards demonstrate how crucial community practices are to the development of new oncology therapies," said Dr. Atul Dhir, US Oncology's President of Cancer Research Services. "US Oncology is proud that, for the third consecutive year, practices affiliated with our network have been recognized for their significant contributions to cancer research. These practices embody our mission by ensuring that all cancer patients have access to the most advanced care, and to accelerating the research necessary to improve the quality of cancer care for the future."
Dr. Larry Garbo accepted the award on behalf of New York Oncology Hematology and Dr. Allen L. Cohn represented Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers.
Currently the US Oncology Research Network has more than 520 physicians actively enrolling patients, 88 research sites, and is involved in 62 open research trials. The contributions of the network have been significant: it has contributed to the development of 23 of 29 of the latest cancer-fighting drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use. Since 1993, nearly 30,000 patients have participated in clinical trials managed by the US Oncology Research Network.
