Naturalpha Advises Food Companies how to Anticipate and Optimize their Health Claim Strategy

Lille (France), Cambridge (Massachusetts - USA), February 7, 2010, Naturalpha, international consulting, scientific and clinical research company in Nutrition and Health, partner of the Food and Pharmaceutical Industries, presents its analysis of the health claims dossiers reviewed by EFSA in order to allow food manufacturers to focus on potential generic health claims opportunities and to build an efficient R&D and health claim applications strategy.

In October, a third batch of scientific opinions for the ”general function” health claims (mentioned as 13.1) based on the work of EFSA’s NDA experts panel was published. It revealed 75 opinions related to 808 claims, bringing the number of claims assessed to 1745 on a total of 4637 health claims included in a list drawn up by the Member States of the European Commission. Despite 85% are negative opinions, the claims approved by EFSA still provide a wide range of opportunities to be explored by food Industrials. The European Commission will publish in 2012, after EFSA has evaluated all generic claims, a European register which will establish a definitive list of approved generic claims.

The deadline for analysis of generic claims requests which has been extended, together with the uncertainty about the nutrient profiles, create a latency period in the Nutrition & Health sector. But how can manufacturers take advantage of this delay to better prepare? How can they take advantage of generic claim opportunities to be more reactive?
