“The recognition of URAC in Michigan demonstrates that URAC’s rigorous accreditation process and standards help to improve the quality and operations of health care organizations and protect patients and beneficiaries,” said Garry Carneal, URAC president and CEO. “In addition, this further validates our contentions that private accreditation can assist federal and state processes to help promote quality health care.”

The Michigan Department of Community Health has released a new Invitation to Bid that includes URAC accreditation. The Michigan Department of Community Health will newly recognize URAC for the Medicaid Health Plans starting October 1, 2004 for a period of two years based on the strength of URAC as an accrediting body.

Recently updated, URAC’s Health Plan Accreditation standards include key quality benchmarks for network management, provider credentialing, utilization management, quality management and improvement and consumer protection. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, many state regulators and the federal government have identified URAC accreditation as an indicator of health plan quality.

URAC is recognized by 34 states, the District of Columbia, and three federal agencies, further reinforcing URAC’s position as the nation’s most recognized health care accreditation organization for managed care functions at the state level.
