August 23, 2011 Bar Harbor, Maine—The Jackson Laboratory has appointed three new members to its Board of Trustees: Jeffrey Dunn, M.D., Neal Milch, J.D., and Charles E. Hewett, Ph.D. The trio was elected at the Laboratory’s 82nd annual meeting here earlier this month.
The newly elected chair of the Board, Leo Holt, said, "I am excited by the quality of the individuals who have joined us." He noted that Laboratory's next president and CEO, once appointed, will also become a member of the Board, ex officio.
Jeffrey Dunn, M.D., of Philadelphia, Penn., and Mount Desert, Maine, joins the Board as the incoming president of The National Council, a nationwide organization of Jackson Laboratory supporters. Dunn, a pediatric thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, is executive vice president, chief medical officer and founding partner of MediQLogix, a company that provides hospitals and health care systems with software solutions for clinical quality and safety performance improvement. His prior clinical, academic and administrative leadership includes serving as tenured professor and chief of pediatric cardiac surgery at Temple University and as director of the Pediatric Heart Institute at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Dunn also served as senior national medical director of VHA, and chief medical officer and hospital president of a large East Coast hospital system.
He was educated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College. His general and cardiac surgical training was at the University of Michigan and the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London. Dunn is the author of two pediatric cardiac textbook and numerous scientific papers. His numerous honors and recognitions include Who’s Who in America and in the World, the Legion of the Four Chaplains Award, and the American Heart Association of Pennsylvania Physician of the Year Award.
Neal Milch, J.D., of Hewlett Neck, N.Y., is the CEO of Autarkic Holdings, Inc., a supplier of commercial laundry and wetcleaning equipment doing business as Laundrylux. In 2007, Milch succeeded his father as CEO of Bermil Industries Corp. He was the company's president from 1995 to 2007, and held multiple positions between 1984 and 1995. He has also held an executive position with Electrolux in Europe.
Milch is one of the co-founders of Cbite, which focuses on thin film transistor (TFT) technology to enable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display panels and next-generation active-matrix liquid crystal displays. He earned his B.A. at Stanford University and attended the London School of Economics. He holds a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, with a focus on intellectual property.
Charles E. Hewett, Ph.D., of Holden, Maine, is executive vice president and chief operating officer of The Jackson Laboratory. Since joining the Laboratory in 2004, Hewett has overseen the launch of numerous research products and services, the modernization of mouse production facilities, completion of new research laboratories in Bar Harbor, and the relocation and expansion of the Laboratory’s Sacramento, Calif., operation.
Prior to joining the Laboratory, as CEO of Atlantic Energy Partners, Hewett developed a $650 million underwater electric transmission system connecting Long Island, NY, to New Jersey, which now provides almost one quarter of Long Island’s power. In the mid 1990s he served for three years as chief operating officer of the Executive Branch of the State of Maine under Governor Angus King. Earlier in his career, he held chief executive posts in international pharmaceuticals, electricity generation, and natural resource management. Hewett has developed companies, facilities and projects in Europe and Asia as well as in North America. Hewett holds a Phi Beta Kappa BA from Williams College and MFS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University.
The Jackson Laboratory is a nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center based in Bar Harbor, Maine. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human disease, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
