BRUSSELS. Tuesday April 26 -The International Diabetes Federation1 (IDF), representing over 200 diabetes associations in 160 countries, today released its first ever Annual Report 2010, replacing its usual triennial activity report.
This landmark year witnessed both IDF’s 60th anniversary and the year when diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) finally rose to the forefront of global awareness and the political agenda.
Highlight of the year was the unanimous vote by United Nations Member States to hold a UN High-Level Summit on NCDs in September 2011.
“Building on previous successes such as the 2006 UN Resolution on Diabetes, the UN Summit decision and other key policy wins in 2010 stem directly from IDF’s leadership position in the diabetes and wider NCD community” said Professor Jean Claude Mbanya, President of IDF “these achievements represent a true turning point in the fight against diabetes and other neglected diseases”.
The complete report is available on IDF’s webpage and can also be downloaded in French and Spanish. Other highlights include:
- An overwhelming display of global support on World Diabetes Day most notably a rally at the Great Wall of China. More than 900 monuments in 84 countries shone blue on November 14, 2010
- The expansion of IDF’s Life for a Child Programme into eight new countries. A total of 8,000 children with diabetes are now supported in 29 countries across the world
- Completion of IDF’s Social and Economic Impact of Diabetes Study (DIS) in 12 sites in China, where over 92 million people live with the condition. Results were released at an expert summit in Beijing. Attended by over 100 people including representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Health and Chinese Medical Association
IDF has already continued its successful advocacy work into 2011. In March, the Proposed Outcomes Document, listing 34 recommendations for the UN high Level Summit on NCDs was released by the NCD Alliance2. And in April, IDF released the first ever Charter of Rights and Responsibilities of People with Diabetes.
