BETHESDA, Md., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Jeffrey A. Kant, MD, PhD, Professor of Pathology and Human Genetics and Director of the Division of Molecular Diagnostics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, received the 2005 AMP Leadership Award during the annual meeting of the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP), November 11-13, 2005 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Dr. Kant is the first recipient of the AMP Leadership Award, which was inaugurated this year to recognize an AMP member for exceptional leadership in advancing the mission and goals of the association. The award is supported by a grant from Abbott Molecular.
“Dr. Jeff Kant is a natural choice for the first AMP Leadership Award. Throughout his career, Jeff has been devoted to molecular diagnostics and the growth and nurture of the Association for Molecular Pathology through his service and wise counsel at every level of the organization,” remarked Mark A. Lovell, MD, current President of the Association for Molecular Pathology.
“We’re pleased to sponsor this important award, which recognizes exceptional leadership in molecular pathology and further supports the AMP’s overall commitment to excellence in molecular diagnostics,” said Edward Michael, president, Abbott Molecular.
Dr. Kant received his Bachelor’s diploma in Biology from Princeton University, followed by his MD and PhD (Biochemistry) degrees at the University of Chicago where he was among the first Medical Scientist Training Program students. Following residency training and research in pathology and tumor immunology at the University of Washington and a fellowship/Expert Consultant role at the National Cancer Institute with emphases on hematopathology and molecular biology, Dr. Kant relocated to the University of Pennsylvania. There he directed the Hematology laboratory and Hematopathology program for a number of years and founded one of the nation’s first clinical molecular diagnostics laboratories in the mid-1980s.
Dr. Kant has devoted himself over the past two decades to moving discoveries in molecular pathogenesis into the clinical laboratory to benefit patients and physicians and to establish the field of molecular diagnostics more broadly. He is currently Chair of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Biochemical and Molecular Genetics Resource Committee, a member of CAP’s Molecular Pathology Committee, and serves an adviser in CAP on coding and reimbursement issues for molecular assays. He was instrumental in founding the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) and has served AMP as its first President and in numerous other roles. Dr. Kant is currently Professor of Pathology and Human Genetics and Director of the Division of Molecular Diagnostics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he also directs fellowship programs in Molecular Genetic Pathology and Clinical Molecular Genetics. Dr. Kant is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and now the first recipient of the AMP Leadership Award.
The Association for Molecular Pathology is an international professional society representing physicians, doctoral scientists, medical technologists, and industry professionals involved in molecular diagnostics. The AMP annual meeting is the premier meeting in molecular diagnostics and molecular pathology, presenting the latest scientific developments in hematopathology, infectious diseases, solid tumors, and genetics.
