DBA Primax Biosciences Inc. Release: Novel Transfection System iPorator-96TM Won 2012 R&D 100 Award

(Menlo Park, CA) iPorator-96TM transfection system, developed by Rational Biotechnology Inc. (DBA Primax Biosciences Inc.) to enable high effective transfection in more physiologically relevant cells, was granted as a 2012 R&D 100 award winner. The R&D 100 award recognizes the 100 most technologically significant products over the past year. “Despite a slow economy, the competition experienced a near record number of entries from around the world. This demonstrates that researchers are committed to innovate.” said Rita Peters, editorial director of R&D Magazine. iPoration technology overcomes a major challenge in biology and drug discovery research: inability to manipulate gene expression in more physiologically relevant fully differentiated cells. iPoration technology enables effective non-viral delivery of various biomolecules (DNA, siRNA, miRNA, and peptide) into fully differentiated cells, whether they are immortalized cell lines or patient-derived primary cells. Therefore, it facilitates use of more physiologically relevant cell models in a wide-range of cell biology and drug discovery research, which could substantially improve correlation between in vitro cell based study and in vivo environment.

“Our morphologic and biochemical studies on human kidney and craniofacial disorders depend on being able to transfect confluent, fully polarized renal epithelia and odontoblasts on filter supports. Such conditions are well established to mimic the fully differentiated and polarized phenotype of these cells in vivo and are crucial for studying normal physiologic function. In our personal experience, lipofection offers poor transfection efficiencies (1-5%) of polarized cells. Immortalized odontoblasts are virtually untransfectable. Using the iPorator we now routinely obtain transfection efficiencies as high as 60-70% for renal epithelia and up to 30-40% for odontoblasts. A >10-fold increase in efficiency saves us time and money in reagents and makes biochemical studies tractable.” said Dr. Angela Wandinger-Ness, Professor of Pathology & Director Fluorescence Microscopy Facility, UNM.

An independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine select winners of the R&D 100 Awards. Winners will be recognized at the R&D 100 Awards Banquet in November 2012, in Orlando Fla.

About Rational Biotechnology (DBA Primax Biosciences Inc.) Primax Biosciences develops breakthrough transfection technology and products. Our cutting-edge iPoration technology delivers unmatched performance in in situ transfection of adherent primary cells and cell lines, particularly differentiated epithelial cells, endothelial cells and neurons. Our iPorator product is ideal to academic researchers for low/medium throughput siRNA/DNA/peptide transfection, and our iPorator-96 system is designed to meet demands in high-throughput RNAi screening and cell-based assays using more physiologically relevant cell models.
