Consumer Health Sciences Introduces Select(TM) Research Services

PRINCETON, N.J., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumer Health Sciences (CHS), the leading source of information on healthcare consumers' attitudes, behavior, and treatment choices, has introduced a new research capability that gives pharmaceutical manufacturers access to 132,000 pre-screened and profiled patients from four countries for custom research studies. CHS Select. Research Services (SRS) allow market researchers to select and target healthcare consumers based on roughly 4,000 attitudinal, behavioral, clinical, and demographic criteria that respondents have already reported to CHS.

"With Select Research Services, pharmaceutical manufacturers interested in posing specific questions to consumers/patients can head directly to 'Go,' bypassing the costly and time-consuming steps of recruiting and screening a panel," explained Jane A. Donohue, Ph.D. and CHS chief executive officer. "We can help them ask the right questions of the right people at the outset by sorting candidates according to the in-depth information they've already reported to us."

This ability helps companies avoid conducting expensive primary research studies only to learn, after the fact, that only a fraction of the respondents met all their research criteria. "Other consumer panels may be able to identify asthma patients who are on a competing medication and target them for study," admitted Donohue. "But how many of those will be of the select group the company really needs to hear from: dissatisfied users of the competing product ... who have taken it for over two years ... whose asthma is caused by allergic reaction to airborne irritants ... who pay more than $50 out of pocket for monthly medications ... and who are willing to take the medication daily to prevent attacks? It's like planting a field of wild flowers when you only want daisies," added Donohue. "You'll get a few daisies in the mix, but most of the harvest will be wasted."

The consumers/patients within CHS' existing pool have already been surveyed at length as part of the Company's annual National Health and Wellness Survey and various disease-specific longitudinal studies. Therefore, they:

  -- Represent undiagnosed/untreated and diagnosed/treated patients over 18
     years of age
-- Reside in the United States, Great Britain, France, or
     Germany
-- Include sufferers in over 60 disease categories
-- Are extensively profiled based on their attitudes toward healthcare in
general, health history, health habits, health economics, quality of
life, drug use and satisfaction (Rx and OTC), time on therapy, severity
of condition, and source of healthcare information.

The results of the customized Select Research can be cross-tabulated against any of the attitudinal, behavioral, economic, clinical, and demographic data that Consumer Health Sciences maintains on file to produce both quantitative and qualitative analyses.
