College Of American Pathologists Contributes $100,000 To Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund

NORTHFIELD, Ill., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- To help meet the medical needs of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has established a Hurricane Katrina relief fund through the CAP Foundation. Donations to that relief fund will be matched by the CAP dollar for dollar up to $100,000. Dr. Thomas M. Sodeman, MD, FCAP, president of the College announced the fund yesterday during the CAP annual meeting in Chicago.

“As pathologists, our members understand the toll this disaster has taken and are committed to providing for the health and wellness of the people affected by Hurricane Katrina,” said Dr. Sodeman. “It is critical that victims of this disaster have access to the medical services they need in addition to food, shelter, clothing and other things that will allow them to rebuild their lives.”

“The College hopes that our contribution will encourage other medical associations to give what they can in this time of national crisis,” said Mary E. Kass, MD, FCAP, immediate past president. “As physicians and medical professionals we have an obligation to help the sick and injured through both our practice of medicine and contributions such as this one.”

The College of American Pathologists is a medical society that serves more than 16,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. It is the world’s largest association composed exclusively of pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The College is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective medical care.
