OAKLAND, Calif., July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Children’s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland has been ranked one of “America’s Best Hospitals” in the pediatric category in the July 5th issue of U.S.News & World Report.
According to the publication, the entire survey evaluated all of 6,012 U.S. medical centers based on rigorous standards. Only 177, or fewer than 1 in 30, were of high-enough quality to be ranked in even a single specialty this year. U.S.News & World Report ranked Children’s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland 24th in a field of approximately 250 children’s hospitals and related institutions in the country.
“Children’s Hospital has been an exemplary facility since it opened in 1912,” said president and CEO Tony Paap. “It’s great to be nationally recognized for the excellent medical care and expertise we provide to the region’s children.”
The “America’s Best Hospitals” methodology was devised by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. In the pediatric specialty category, board-certified physicians were selected at random from the American Medical Association’s Masterfile of all 811,000 doctors and mailed a survey form asking them to list up to five hospitals they believe to be the best in their specialty without considering cost or location. The number of physicians surveyed per specialty was 150 in 2004.
Children’s Hospital & Research Center at Oakland is the Bay Area’s only freestanding pediatric hospital, which offers expert care to all children, regardless of financial circumstances. It is the only designated level one trauma center just for kids in Northern California. Last year, more than 65,000 kids came to Children’s Hospital to see physicians in 30 specialties such as cardiology, oncology and pediatric rehabilitation. The hospital has one of the lowest mortality rates for kids who have undergone open-heart surgery in the United States. It delivered the first cure for alpha thalassemia major in North America.
