MONTCLAIR, N.J., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Society of Pain Educators will convene the annual Pain Educators Forum, September 8-11, 2005, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The three-day conference will be held at the Westin Casuarina Hotel & Spa.
The Pain Educators Forum trains clinicians to effectively teach about pain management to their peers (other professionals) and patients. According to Executive Director, B. Eliot Cole, MD, MPA, "Attendees will learn the most recent concepts in pain management, adult learning theory and some of the best practices available. The pain educator model is based on the diabetes educator model, and the ASPE is the only pain organization that is focused on perpetuating this approach to pain management education. We have intentionally designed the meeting so that attendees will have unlimited access to the teaching faculty in the process of receiving 30 continuing medical education credits."
Participants will receive a binder and a CD-ROM containing all of the lectures presented, in a ready-to-use format, along with supplemental teaching resources to allow them to teach as soon as they return from the meeting. This meeting is the first step in the pathway toward becoming a Credentialed Pain Educator (CPE).
Dr. Cole believes that the ASPE may soon be the largest pain organization in the US, as "every JCAHO-accredited hospital is mandated to provide pain education. There are over 18,000 JCAHO hospitals that must now have in-house pain education resources, thus it is conceivable that the ASPE could eventually have 18,000-20,000 members with credentialed pain educators in every JCAHO facility and primary care practice."
The American Society of Pain Educators is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the standards of clinical pain practice by providing training in pain management education and establishing credentialed pain educators (CPEs) as fixed assets within pain practices, hospitals, healthcare systems, and long-term care facilities. CPEs will function as in-house standing people resources who are available to work with clinical peers, patients and their families to translate care plans, extend the amount of service being provided to patients, orient patients to new medications, monitor for safety, efficacy, compliance, and toxicity.
The membership is comprised of physicians, nursing professionals, physician assistants, health system pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals treating pain. Because of its inclusive membership profile, no one-pain discipline dominates the educational offerings or mission of the ASPE.
