Australian researchers said that they had developed an extremely accurate technique for killing cancer cells with radiation without affecting surrounding health tissues. The scientists at Melbourne’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Center said their process uses antibodies and DNA attached to a radioactive atom to identify and kill cancerous cells. The center’s Tom Karagiannis told national broadcaster ABC that the cancer-killing molecules had been effective in laboratory tests and could undergo clinical trials within five years. The treatment uses two levels of targeting and is the most specific ever developed in terms of targetting cancer cells, he said.
