Recruiting problems have slowed down the first study designed to test whether Athersys Inc.'s adult stem cell therapy works in humans. The Cleveland company, working with pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, has had trouble recruiting patients for the Phase II clinical trial, which will test whether Athersys’ MultiStem treatment works on patients with ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease. The companies plan to complete patient enrollment before the end of the year and produce results from the trial in early 2014.
