Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse Invests $150,000 in Applied Isotope Technologies Inc.

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse (PLSG), the private/public partnership putting the region's life sciences industry on a fast track for growth, announced that the PLSG has invested $150,000 in Applied Isotope Technologies (AIT). AIT is an early-stage reagent manufacturer that is focused on developing reagents, standards and kits that will measure the toxicity of metal-speciated forms in urine and other biological fluids using a specially developed mass spectrometer technology called Speciated Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry (SIDMS). SIDMS is an EPA-approved method currently being used nationally to successfully measure toxicity levels of speciated metals in soil samples.

SIDMS was invented by one of AIT's founders, Professor Howard M. "Skip" Kingston of Duquesne University.

The PLSG's $150,000 investment will help AIT launch new products to larger markets in general biochemistry and clinical biochemistry with the eventual goal of developing test kits and complete testing systems for the In Vitro Diagnostic segments of the life sciences market.

"Today, there is significant focus on environmental health and the thousands of chemicals to which human beings are being exposed," said John W. Manzetti, President & CEO of the PLSG. "AIT is helping by making products that will permit accurate measurement of how the human body deals with exposure to poisons and facilitate finding new chemimarkers(TM) and/or biomarkers that result in better diagnostic tools." Mr. Manzetti continued, "The AIT SIDMS method is proving to show unprecedented accuracy at nanogram level analyses and it is adaptable to every individual case when there is a need to measure very small amounts of complex chemicals, accurately. This accuracy, adaptability and the simplicity of their testing kits has the potential revolutionize the laboratory work environment."
