Medical device maker Boston Scientific Corp. (BSX: Quote) said Wednesday that an advisory panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or FDA voted favorably on the company's Watchman Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device. The company expects the experimental heart-implant device will be approved for use as a treatment to prevent strokes in people with irregular heartbeats. Atrial fibrillation or AF is an irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. AF is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, currently affecting more than five million Americans. Patients with AF have a five-fold increased risk of stroke due to blood stagnating from the improperly beating atrium and the resulting blood clot formation.
