Thomson Micromedex Introduces Intravenous Drug Compatibility System For Enhancing Patient Safety

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Micromedex, a part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSC: TOC), the leader in information solutions for scientific and healthcare professionals, today introduced a new intravenous (IV) drug compatibility and stability resource. The electronic solution provides clinicians with facts to help identify, interpret, and avoid potentially dangerous IV incompatibilities.

“IV INDEX(R) takes compatibility information to a new level,” said Arnold Sorocki, Sr. Director, Pharmacy & Materials, at Vail Valley Medical Center. “Rapid access to comprehensive, well-documented information sets this resource apart. I feel comfortable making this clinical knowledge resource, as well as the entire Micromedex suite, available to caregivers with the assurance that it can be safely used without the fear of misinterpretation of the data.”

The new IV INDEX features Trissel’s(TM) 2, the latest database from IV compatibility authority Lawrence Trissel, MS, FASHP. This database spans 600 unique drugs and solutions, including chemotherapy drugs, and more than 50,000 compatibility results.

“IV INDEX with Trissel’s 2 is the most comprehensive collection of parenteral drug stability and compatibility information ever assembled,” said Lawrence Trissel. “It’s literally more than four times the amount of research result information than any other print product or electronic database.”

In addition to providing tens of thousands of compatibility results, IV INDEX offers solution, Y-Site, syringe, and admixture compatibility information, and Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) information. IV INDEX allows for either single or multiple drug searches and gives clinicians a word wheel to easily look up drug names. These features help clinicians make quick decisions at the point of care and ultimately ensure optimal drug utilization and cost-effectiveness throughout the hospital.

“By working hand-in-hand with practicing nurses and pharmacists to pinpoint current workflow inefficiencies, we’ve designed a more comprehensive solution to better help clinicians maintain a high level of patient care,” said Jay Katzen, Vice President, Marketing and Product Development, at Thomson Micromedex.

IV INDEX is currently available within the Micromedex(R) Healthcare Series online, with plans to be available via Intranet in 2005. More information about IV INDEX is available at http://www.micromedex.com/ or by calling (800) 525-9083.
