Dr. Neel Shah Of Harvard Medical School And Ariadne Labs Joins Square Roots Advisory Board

NEW YORK, Dec. 2, 1015 /PRNewswire/ -- Square Roots, a life sciences company focused on pregnancy and the healthy formation of life, today announced the addition of Dr. Neel Shah, MD, MPP to its Advisory Board.

Dr. Shah is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School and Associate Faculty at the Ariadne Labs: a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.

Dr. Shah is an expert in designing, testing, and spreading system interventions that improve the safety, affordability, and experience of patient care during critical life moments that range from surgery to primary care to childbirth. As an obstetrician, he cares for pregnant women and delivers babies at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

"Dr. Neel Shah is one of the top healthcare minds in the world and we are fortunate to add him to our team of experts," said Morad Fareed, founder and CEO, Square Roots. "His innovative research on improving childbirth gives critical insights that will help develop integrated solutions."

"The American way of childbirth is the costliest on the planet, yet our healthcare delivery systems are less safe than every other developed nation," said Dr. Shah. "Square Roots is poised to lead much needed improvements that ensure we're taking better care of our moms--I'm thrilled to join the team."

Prior to joining the Harvard Medical School faculty, Dr. Shah founded Costs of Care, a global NGO that curates insights from clinicians to help delivery systems provide better care at lower cost. He is listed among the "40 smartest people in health care" by the Becker's Hospital Review, and has been profiled in the New York Times, the New England Journal of Medicine, and other outlets for his efforts to expose how low value care can harm patients.

Square Roots was founded to address the current poor state of maternal health as the United States currently ranks only 33rd out of 176 countries as the best place to be a mother, and 56th in the world out of 224 countries in infant mortality.1 Additionally, in the U.S. women face a 1 in 1,800 risk of maternal death, the worst performance of any developed country in the world and the only developed nation with a rising maternal mortality rate.2
