It will be never too bold to imagine that sunlight the endless and reliable energy source can be directly turned into fuel that can be taken advantages of by humans in various aspects like fuel and other forms of resources. Suppose that we can change solar into a new form of energy, which is cheap and available anywhere. What a wonderful picture! The situation is potential to become true with the latest study results of scientists. In the past decades, scientists had been trying to changing the sunlight into fuel which can be directly used for a long time. And the most feasible method put up by them is photosynthesis. By which, the green leaf play as a bionic factory, and chemical energy was produced by synthesis and stored in carbohydrate molecules and then oxygen would be released when the carbohydrate decompose into water and carbon dioxide.

From the theory and process of photosynthesis, it can be judged that it’s quite green and no extra waste will be produced during the whole process, however, it’s of very low efficiency, and the transforming rate is merely 1%. The inefficiency is mainly because that the condition limitation of photosynthesis. It can be only achieved when the carbon dioxide level of the atmosphere reach a certain level. Scientists were always interested in if a more efficient and direct way can come into appearance. Later they did find it. And the final product was hydrogen. But because of the high transporting cost, it’s not a very ideal alternative energy for daily use.

Then another type of biofuel isopropanol came into the sight of scientists. Isopropanol is one of the main constituents of rubbing alcohol. In the study, isopropanol is produced by a type of soil bacteria relying on hydrogen and oxide for living. The bacteria are genetically modified to make isopropanol. Isopropanol will be a perfect new source of energy for that as a solvent it has been widely applied in chemical industry and drugs. The studies of isopropanol producing project is led by a research team from Harvard Medical School and now it has been considered as an important project by the U.S. government. A considerable grant has been allowed. Once it’s successful, a new environmentally protective energy source will be available and the whole human kind won’t need to worry about running out unsustainable fuel. But it’s still in the first stage of the study; there is still a long way to go.
