Berkeley, Calif. (April 25, 2010) – Millions of Americans filed their taxes last week, unaware that their tax dollars support “cash cow” scientists, some of whom receive millions of dollars in grants each year for wasteful experiments that hurt animals and don’t help people.
But many people are aware of this waste, and they are demanding change.
What: Protest for World Week for Animals in Laboratories
Where: UC Berkeley campus - corner of Oxford and University
When: Today, Monday April 25, noon – 2 p.m.
Activists with In Defense of Animals (IDA), Stop Animal Exploitation Now (SAEN) and United for Animals will demonstrate to raise awareness of animal experimentation at UC Berkeley and beyond. They will be protesting right outside the Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences where thousands of animals suffer in underground labs.
During World Week for Animals in Laboratories, activists around the world rally their forces and speak out for animals tortured and killed in the name of science. Dozens of events ranging from massive protests to theatre performances are taking place in France, Canada, and over 20 American cities. The event concludes today.
The demonstrators are contacting their U.S. Senators and Representatives, asking them to co-sponsor the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act (S. 810 / H.R. 1513), which would end invasive research on great apes. They are also sending letters to the chief administrators of the National Institutes of Health and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, asking these agencies to take immediate, concrete action to reduce the number of animals in experiments each year.
