Wide Variations Seen in National Carotid Revascularization Patterns

Use of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) varies significantly across different parts of the United States, according to a study of Medicare beneficiaries published in the July 26, 2010, issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. While both procedures are more often performed in men and those with a prior diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease, stenting is more common in patients with a prior diagnosis of coronary artery disease or previous CEA.
