ROCHESTER, N.Y., July 16 — A pet’s unconditional love has helped create a $50 billion U.S. market for veterinary products and services that often include specialized diet, therapies and advanced medical care to enhance or extend the life of beloved pets.

The University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine (St. Paul, Minn.) recently upgraded its CARESTREAM Vue PACS that delivers efficient viewing, storage and sharing of X-ray, MRI, CT and other studies that have been captured in its veterinary hospital. The college also purchased Carestream’s zero-footprint, Web-based Vue Motion viewer to equip referring veterinarians with on demand electronic access to imaging studies.

“We are creating a portal for our EMR that will give our referring veterinarians convenient electronic access to reports and imaging studies that were performed on their patients,” said Daniel Cronk, LVT, the Veterinary Medical Center’s PACS Administrator. “The Vue Motion viewer will deliver exceptional flexibility by allowing vets to access this information on a wide variety of devices—such as laptops, PCs or mobile devices such as iPads—without downloading special software.” A more efficient workflow will benefit both staff and clients and will replace the time-consuming process of sharing imaging studies and reports by fax, DVD or email, adds Cronk.

The university’s veterinary college offers a four-year program and its hospital serves thousands of referring veterinarians across the country—and occasionally vets from other countries as well. Its faculty and researchers are nationally and internationally recognized, with expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of diseases and conditions. The College’s Veterinary Medicine and Comparative and Molecular Biosciences graduate programs prepare students for careers in biomedical sciences and higher education. Taught by an outstanding faculty, students pursue master’s or Ph.D. degrees in diverse disciplines including genomics, molecular biology, comparative medicine, pathology, internal medicine, surgery, and theriogenology. Members of the College’s faculty are nationally and internationally recognized for teaching and research excellence.
