Two HealthEast Care System Hospitals Named In Top 100 Hospitals In The Nation

ST. PAUL, Minn., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood and St. Joseph’s Hospital in downtown St. Paul were recognized this morning as two of the country’s 100 top hospitals. Solucient, a health care business intelligence company, selected these two HealthEast hospitals for its 100 Top Hospital Awards for 2004. This is St. John’s third time on this prestigious list, and St. Joseph’s first time.

This award is based on the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals(R): National Benchmarks for Success study, 12th edition. This annual study recognizes U.S. hospitals that demonstrate superior clinical outcomes, patient safety, operational and financial performance, and service to the community. The Solucient Center for Healthcare Improvement performs an annual objective statistical analysis of publicly available data from more than 6,000 acute care and specialty hospitals in the United States. Hospitals in the study group are assigned to one of five comparison groups according to bed size, teaching status, and residency program involvement. St. John’s Hospital was assigned to the Medium Community Hospital category (100 to 249 beds), and St. Joseph’s Hospital was assigned to the Teaching Hospital category.

Within this comparison groups, Solucient ranks hospitals on the basis of their performance on key measures relative to other hospitals in their group. They then sum each hospital’s performance-measure ranking to arrive at a total ranking for the hospital. The hospitals with the best total ranking in each comparison group were selected as the benchmarks. There were a total of 20 winners in the medium community hospital category, and 25 in the teaching hospital category.

The Top 100 Hospital Awards are featured in the February 28 issue of Modern Healthcare magazine, as well as on the web sites: http://www.100tophospitals.com/ and http://www.modernhealthcare.com/ .
