Farmington, Conn.—Three Connecticut residents have joined the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine and are scheduled to start work by the end of December.
The hirings, announced this week, bring to 27 the number of new jobs created and filled at the new research institute, meeting the year-end target in the Laboratory’s agreement with the state of Connecticut. Recruiting is ongoing, for both scientific and administrative positions.
William Burke, an information technology professional and a resident of Farmington, has accepted the position of systems engineer. He will start working at the Laboratory on Dec. 10. Burke comes to JAX Genomic Medicine from IBM Global Services, where he provided customer support for major accounts. His background in scientific technology includes employment at Merck Research Laboratories in Boston, Novartis Pharmaceuticals in New Jersey and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Northeastern University and a second bachelor’s degree in information systems management from City University of New York.
Julie F. Yarmolovich will be a research administrative specialist at JAX Genomic Medicine, and is scheduled to start work at the end of December. She is a resident of Middletown, Conn. Yarmolovich comes to the Laboratory from the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS at the Yale School of Public Health, where she has been employed as an executive assistant. From 1990 to 2010, she worked at Saint Raphael Healthcare System in New Haven, Conn. Yarmolovich holds a bachelor’s degree in community service from Bemidji State University in Minnesota.
Renee Pacewicz is a financial analyst who also will start work at JAX Genomic Medicine at the end of December. Pacewicz lives in Suffield, Conn., and has most recently been employed as a senior financial analyst by Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., in Simsbury, Conn. She previously held positions with Cigna Investment Management in Bloomfield, Conn., and ING Group in Hartford. Pacewicz has a bachelor’s degree in management from Keene State College in New Hampshire.
The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine is housed in temporary quarters on the campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. Construction of a 189,000-square-foot permanent facility will begin in January 2013, with occupancy of the new space scheduled for fall of 2014. The research center will bring together scientists and clinicians to study human genomics and apply new discoveries to the medical care of patients with cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders and other genetic diseases and conditions. The Laboratory is projected to employ 300 scientists, administrators and support specialists by 2020.
The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine, with a facility in Sacramento, Calif., and a new genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Conn. It employs a total staff of more than 1,400. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.
