The Stem Cell Wars

May 26, 2005 -- There are three fronts in the stem cell wars. Currently, there is movement on all of them. Most prominently, the US Congress is challenging President Bush, who is morally opposed to destroying any embryos for the purpose of research. There is the funding front, kicked off by California’s $3 billion stem cell research initiative, meant to make an end run around President Bush’s restrictions on research spending. And then there is the research front itself, which seems to be making progress, with almost daily press reports of new experiments that confirm the promise of the most hopeful backers behind stem cells. What is the upshot of all this activity?
