IRVINE, Calif., May 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2007.
During the first quarter ended March 31, 2007, Spectrum Pharmaceuticals recorded a net loss of approximately $7.9 million (including approximately $1.3 million non-cash stock-based charges), compared to a net loss of approximately $5.9 million, (including approximately $1.4 million non-cash stock-based charges), in the first quarter ended March 31, 2006. During the quarter ended March 31, 2007, the net cash used in operations was approximately $5.5 million. Compared to the same quarter in 2006, research and development expenses increased approximately $1.3 million due to the expanded scope of our research and development activities, including an increase in the number of personnel in preparation for the commencement of a Phase 3 trial for EOquin(R). In addition, general and administrative expenses increased by approximately $1.1 million, primarily due to increased legal expenses related to the arbitration. During the quarter ended March 31, 2007, we recorded $343,000 in revenues representing amounts received under our license agreement for commissions on satraplatin purchased. As of March 31, 2007, we had cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of approximately $45.5 million. As of April 27, 2007, approximately 25.7 million shares were issued and outstanding.
"Since the beginning of this year, we have made tremendous progress with our late-stage drugs. First a New Drug Application for satraplatin was filed and accepted for priority review, with a target decision date (PDUFA date) of August 15, 2007, by the FDA. Second, the EOquin drug development program received a Special Protocol Assessment from the FDA for the treatment of non-invasive bladder cancer. Finally, we completed target enrollment in the ozarelix Phase 2b trial in BPH," stated Rajesh C. Shrotriya, M.D., Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Spectrum Pharmaceuticals. "These accomplishments set the stage for the potential approval of satraplatin, which will allow us to receive additional milestone payments and royalties on sales, and for the advancement of ozarelix and EOquin into pivotal Phase 3 trials this year."
