WORCESTER, Mass., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 7,500 cancer survivors, their friends and families, and members of the community followed the course around Worcester's Lake Quinsigamond to raise more than $600,000 for UMASS Medical Center's continuing research to find a cure for cancer.
"We still have contributions coming in, and have already surpassed last year's Walk to Cure Cancer total," said Cheryl Cusson, walk manager.
"We had magnificent weather, and the spirit and caring shown by the teams who represented friends, family members, and supporters of people who have cancer was gratifying," said Ms. Cusson.
The Walk began at the UMASS Medical School campus on Lake Avenue North (corner of Plantation Street and Rt. 9). It followed both a one-mile route and a five-mile route around Lake Quinsigamond.
Walk to Cure Cancer is an annual community event. Thousands from all walks of life have fun while supporting a great cause. Funds raised through the Walk will support groundbreaking research at the UMASS Memorial Cancer Center in Worcester. The Center's exciting new advances in prostate research and major research initiative for breast cancer have energized Walk participants.
Walk teams are a special way to celebrate a cancer survivor or to honor those who have lost their battle. Support materials are provided to help with recruiting and fundraising. Food, beverages, music and exercise, everything that makes it a great day for walkers, is provided.
Walk to Cure Cancer is sponsored by premier sponsor Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts in partnership with the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
