Professor Paul Freemont Joins the NetScientific Scientific Advisory Board

London (June 29, 2011) – NetScientific announces today that it has appointed Professor Paul Freemont, a pioneer in the emerging field of synthetic biology, to its Scientific Advisory Board.

NetScientific funds and commercialises industry-driven research at leading institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States, focusing on personalised medicine and green technologies. Its team draws on a wealth of experience to identify cutting-edge technologies in these fields and provide targeted funding to accelerate research and development, in return for rights to commercially exploit the resulting intellectual property. NetScientific operates in Europe through NetScientific Limited and in the USA through NetScientific America, Inc.

Professor Paul Freemont is Chair of Protein Crystallography and Head of the Division of Molecular Biosciences at Imperial College London. His research has focused on understanding how disease-linked proteins work at the molecular level and he has made several important contributions in this field including the identification and naming of a novel protein domain (RING finger) found in many cancer-linked proteins. More recently, Professor Freemont has developed research interests in synthetic biology, an emerging field that aims to combine the strengths of the engineering and physical sciences with biological sciences to enable the design and engineering of new biological systems and devices. In 2009 he co-founded the EPSRC Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation at Imperial College, the first UK centre for synthetic biology. In addition to his research interests, he has served on the Molecules, Genes and Cells Wellcome Trust panel, chaired the Imperial Life Science Infrastructure committee, coordinated the development of high-field NMR and imaging facilities at Imperial and sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Chemical Biology Centre.

Speaking of the appointment, NetScientific CEO Farad Azima said “We are delighted that Professor Freemont joins us. Having the right members on our Scientific Advisory Board is critical as NetScientific continues to identify opportunities at the cutting-edge of scientific research.”
